I [g]oughta go

Posted by Varies at 9:05 am in Helsinki

What a busy week it was, and what a busy week it will be. Looking back, I spent way too much time writing essays and reading about treatments for chronic neck and back pain. Oh! I also watched quite a bit of playoff baseball, but that’s neither here nor there. Just to finish the thought, I’m going to have to admit to being wholly uninterested in the ALCS. It looks like it’s gonna be a terrible series. On the other hand, I’m totally hyped about the Rockies and the records that they could potentially set if they continue their winning ways. When it comes to sports, there are a lot of obscure records. Part of the enjoyment I get out of sports is seeing those records unearthed any time someone approaches them. I also like seeing insane statistical anomalies, but that’s just me being weird. Read on for stuff that has nothing to do with baseball.

i quit.

not an existential crisis, but a crisis nonetheless. i’m not sure i want to be in a business school. you see, i don’t even like money. or math. or even economics.

i’ve just always been extremely good at school.

and so, i say this to all the asian motherfuckers in the world:

thank you for taking my soul from me.

oh, no. i’m staying in school. i quit the blog.

Who [day] cares?

Posted by Varies at 10:53 am in Helsinki

In the cool confines of Nick and Willy’s pizza parlour, my friend Mike and I were taking in some excellent oven-baked pizza while talking about a number of things. The big topic of discussion was actually Asian day cares. I worked at a place called Plano Day School for a semester while he had worked a different but similar establishment for a few semesters. As ex-employees are apt to do, we divulged trade secrets, compared the dirty laundry, and um… ate pizza. In any business, I’m sure that it’s interesting to hear how your rivals operate. After-school care in Plano is a big ol’ cash cow, and as far as Asian daycares go, our former employers were probably the fattest cows on the farm. By comparing and contrasting the two, we noticed some striking similarities while also marking down some key differences.

Up the pillage

Health psychology is really an interesting field. You know how doctors are always telling their patients that they need to learn to relax or start exercising? Oh, and how they then shove them out the door with naught but a prescription in hand? Well, health psychology is there to help those people who, having been told by their doctors to “relax” after living 20 years under constant stress, have no idea how to suddenly drop everything and chill.

Rocktober!

Posted by Varies at 7:44 am in Helsinki

Well, my baseball predictions have gone somewhat awry, but it’s cool. Since the series are best-of-5, I still mathematically have a chance to pull through. I guess I’ll hold out hope for now. Some quick comments about the series so far: Read the rest of this entry »

Baseball!

Posted by Varies at 6:36 pm in Helsinki

The baseball playoffs will officially begin tomorrow. For those of you who aren’t fans of the sport, there may never be a better time to join in on the fun. See, playoff baseball is everything that we fans love about baseball — without any of the things that we hate. It’s hard to get really excited about a lot of the regular season games because there are (normally) 162 of them, and, with the exception of rivalries and close chases, every game amounts to a drop in the proverbial bucket. Come playoff time, this is no longer the case! Your chances of winning it all ride on every game you play. The diluted 5-man pitching rotations of the regular season are replaced by 3-man rotations where only your top starters take the mound, and all the bad teams that the contenders fatten up on during the regular season are gone. Simply put, the October baseball is baseball on steroids!

After the break, I’ll run down each of the matchups this year starting with the NL.

art

Posted by Lulu at 3:38 pm in Helsinki

okay boys. I have gone on an art-capade. I have talked to many people. I have asked them what art is. This is easy at NYU, where every pretentious asshole who goes to Tisch (the art school) is willing to shed some light on what art is.

 Art is:

A week in review

Posted by Varies at 12:39 pm in Helsinki

Even though I’m still one of those old-fashioned folks who believes that Sunday is the start of the week, I’m gonna review the week on a Saturday. Read up after the page break.

Nothings

Posted by Varies at 8:55 pm in Helsinki

This post is a fill-in post. I wrote another post, but the video embedding process was going nowhere (contrary to the opinion that I was simply too lazy to give an effort). Anyway, here are some other things I was considering writing before settling on the other thing (which I hope to post eventually).

1) Halo 3 is overhyped. I’m glad it’s been released! Maybe now people can stop talking about it.

2) Why do so many people feel the need to “film” themselves talking into a camera when expressing opinions? Just go to youtube and you’ll see a bunch of featured videos where some clown is in front of a camera offering opinions about the Jena 6. My theory is that these people don’t know how to spell or write in coherent sentences, so they can’t run conventional blogs. They also think they look better than they actually do, and, like most teenagers, they think that other people really care about their opinions.

3) Prescriptivists suck. Too much to say about this, I’ll write a separate post later.

4) The perfect future — a story whose entire basis is a grammar pun.

5) The BEARcade.

Blah blah blah.

Don’t taze me, bro

Posted by Varies at 7:13 am in Helsinki

No. I have not seen that video. I’ve just heard the audio over the radio (on NPR, no less). It’s another lazy Sunday here in the crisis hotline center, so I’m just gonna talk about life (and the lack thereof). Read on if you think you would be interested in being bored… by proxy.
