You’re new here, aren’t you? Ain’t seen a new face around here for years.
Sit down, let me buy you a drink. Thirsty? No? Well, it’s refreshing to see a dry sailor now and then. If there’s one thing consistent about the docklands, it’s the healthy amount of drunks.
So what brings you around these parts, son?
Ah, a government worker. No doubt here to fulfill your patriotic duty of staring at cargo crates for hours. Can’t say much excitement goes on around here, at least not anymore.
C’mon, let me get you that drink, it’s the least I can do.

I’m too busy and too unfocused to sit down and write anything, but I’m scheduled to post something anyway. In the future, I’ll probably ask one of my friends to contribute something, but for today’s post, I’ll put up the essay I had to write on Sunday night. Admittedly, the essay sucks. It has no flow, no cohesion, and I had no fun writing it. But whatever, I post it because it is convenient to do so at this time. The only part that was remotely interesting was near the end when I talked about how Asian parents of the my generation have doomed their kids to an upper-middle class existence, but even that part was mostly BS on my part. It might be worth revisiting in a future article, but for now I gotta split. Find the essay after the break. Read the rest of this entry »

…and in doing so, break a long-held tradition of not posting anything straightforward for serious.
In any case, I’ve had a ton of thoughts pertaining to webcomics and print comics and JAPAN comics, and felt like vomiting them onto the inter net. Yes? What?
Today, though, I’ll just talk about Sinfest.

Good morning everyone, I want to keep today’s post short. I spent almost 3 hours writing yesterday’s post (kept getting interrupted by calls), so I didn’t get to play my DS at all. I guess I’ll talk a little about Love and Rock and that’ll be it for today.

It’s not that we were intimidated by him. The five of us could have taken him for sure, but, to me at least, it wouldn’t have been worth the trouble. For one, I really had no desire to seize the controller and play the game. Even as a child, I enjoyed the art of observation. The others, though, were a different story. Their growing impatience was palpable, and as the oldest one in the room, I felt a certain responsibility in keeping the peace. What I used to do in those situations was make suggestions. I’d suggest that the person playing could give someone else a chance. That was usually enough, and sharing would commence without need for further intervention. This guy was different though, and we all knew it. No one wanted to say it, but we all could have told you that he was selfish – super selfish. With him, a suggestion was a cue for others to jump in. It was permission to demand what perhaps should have been theirs naturally.

Originally, I had toyed with the idea of using this blog space to talk about how boring UTD is. I also toyed with the idea of writing in-character as someone very very emo, as the about page says. Then I remembered that UTD is only boring (partially) because of my laziness to get involved, and also that pretending to be emo would get boring, fast. So I guess I’ll just blog this blog normally. I suppose I can still try the emo character on Livejournal. Today I went to the Switchfoot concert. Ruth and Relient K were on tour with them. Some cool details include Relient K’s rendition of The Office theme song, Switchfoot freezing into a picture-perfect pose mid-song for 30 seconds, and several other cases of awesome. Some other unrelated observations are as follows:While they are relatively popular, it’s ridiculous that neither are as well know as some “secular” bands that are inferior in almost every way. Case in point: My Chemical Romance. I can’t personally attest to this, but Taysir tells me that they are horrible live musicians, and the lead singer has stage presence akin to Michael Jackson while he’s dangling a baby over a balcony, and asked during one concert for all the “boys” to take off their shirts. I suppose to closest Switchfoot got to something like that was when they said to put an arm around a neighbor’s shoulder. Is there no justice in the world? On a tangent, I remember hearing a band at last year’s stay day that called themselves “Axis”. They were comprised of nothing but 16-17 year olds, and rocked like it was still the 60s. Apparently, the most work they’ve done as a band is hiring themselves out to birthday parties for a couple hundred a show. I’m still waiting for them to explode. Next time, I will make a post at a time of day when I am thinking coherently.

Hello boys and girls! I’ve been pretty absent [minded] for the past two weeks, but I have returned in a blaze of glory! That is, if you consider four pretty pictures a blaze of glory.

Today there was an exercise that we did wherein we were to supply the punctuation for sentences that lacked it. One of the sentences was as follows:
Did Jon ask Where are they
Can you fix it?

The other day in Grammar, we took the writing section from a practice THEA test. This test is used for teaching certification, and was amusing simply because it was so facile. I probably could have passed the thing in 10th grade! Anyway, I’ve often enjoyed the short essays that they put in standardised tests, and I found one on this test that was fun in more ways than one. Okay, maybe funny’s not the right word. I mean, I found it to be funny, but the joke can only be described as inscribed – which is to say, “you probably won’t get it.” Nonetheless, it’s a poor man’s version of a lesson in rhetoric that might teach you a thing or two. It says some of the things I wanted to write about, but it does it using language that is probably more accessible than what I would have said. Oh, and it’s most definitely less insulting that I would’ve been. You’ll find the test item after the break. Read and learn.
